A fake betting site and an unlicensed betting site are not automatically the same thing. A fake site is built to deceive you, steal money or collect account details. An unlicensed operator may offer real betting, but it does not have current approval from Uganda's gaming regulator for that activity.
🛡️ The good news: both usually give you something you can check before sending the first shilling. Look at the company, exact website, licence mode and payment route instead of trusting the logo or bonus banner.
🎭 What does a fake betting site look like?
It may use a professional website, familiar betting markets and a balance that appears to grow after you deposit. Uganda has already seen platforms built around football and betting that collected money while presenting themselves as legitimate opportunities.
BLQ Football, for example, showed members betting-style predictions, profits and VIP levels before asking for another top-up and disappearing. Ugandans lost an estimated 60 billion UGX according to Daily Monitor's investigation.
🚩 Five warning signs Ugandan bettors should recognise
1. The Uganda licence claim does not match the official list
A licence number or regulator logo in the footer is not independent proof. In 2025, NLGRB warned about WINGO after it claimed approval from a "Gaming Commission of Uganda" that does not exist. The company, website and type of operation must match the current NLGRB list.
2. The website address looks wrong
A suspicious address may contain an extra letter, dash or unfamiliar ending. That alone does not prove it is a scam, but it is enough reason to stop. NLGRB specifically advises players to check website URLs carefully before sharing personal information.
3. Somebody moves the payment outside the official deposit flow
An agent may say the normal system is down and send you a Mobile Money number in chat. Do not assume that number belongs to the bookmaker. Open the official site or app and confirm the payment method with support using contact details published there.
4. A fake support agent
Uganda Communications Commission warns about scammers impersonating technical support and reputable companies to obtain passwords, PINs and personal information. If someone contacts you about a withdrawal and asks for your betting password, Mobile Money PIN or one-time code, stop. Real help does not require the secret code that controls your money.
5. Betting is presented as an investment with guaranteed returns
A normal betting account does not promise fixed daily profits for depositing money or recruiting members. Uganda's Financial Intelligence Authority documented D9 Club, a pyramid scheme claiming to invest in sports betting, while BLQ used football predictions and membership levels to build the same kind of trust.

- ✅ Keep your password, PIN and one-time codes to yourself.
If the website, company and payment destination do not make sense together, leave. Missing one bet is cheaper than chasing money from a site that never intended to pay you.
💸 The "pay again to withdraw" trick
This is where many bettors lose money twice. The site says you won, but first you must pay a tax, unlock fee, account upgrade or verification deposit.
Do not send more money to recover the money already inside the site.
A legitimate bookmaker may request identity verification through its official site or app. It should not turn the process into a chain of new Mobile Money payments to a stranger.
🚨 Already sent money or shared your login?
- Stop paying. Ignore promises that one final fee will release everything.
- Save proof. Keep the exact URL, screenshots, messages, phone numbers and transaction IDs.
- Change your password. Change it anywhere else you reused it too.
- Protect Mobile Money. If you shared a PIN or code, contact your network immediately. Uganda Communications Commission advises victims to report to their service provider first.
- Report it. Suspected illegal betting sites can be sent through the NLGRB complaint form.
⏳ What if the bookmaker is real but your withdrawal is pending?

A good-looking website is not proof of a current Uganda licence, and a missing licence is not by itself proof that the site was built to steal. Both are reasons to keep your money away until the company, domain, licence mode and payment route can be independently verified.
Never give a stranger your password, PIN or one-time code, and never pay an extra fee just to unlock a supposed win.
