Can Craig Goodwin Return in Time? Injury Clouds World Cup Chances

Craig Goodwin’s World Cup Push Faces Another Hurdle

With the 2026 World Cup getting closer and competition for places increasing, Craig Goodwin is running out of time to force his way back into Australia’s plans. Coach Tony Popovic has recently preferred younger options on the left wing, including Nestory Irankunda and Riley McGree, which already makes the path back into the squad difficult.

Goodwin last played a major role for Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he famously scored against France. But after undergoing foot surgery in June last year, he missed the final qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia and has struggled to reestablish himself under Popovic since then.

Groin Strain Hits at the Worst Possible Time

Now, his hopes have taken another hit. The 34-year-old winger suffered a groin strain during Adelaide United’s recent clash with Newcastle Jets, an injury expected to keep him out for up to 12 weeks.

The setback comes at a critical moment, with the Socceroos set to play friendlies against Cameroon in late March and Curacao in early April—matches that could have offered Goodwin a key chance to impress the coaching staff.

No Surgery Required, But a Long Rehab Ahead

Adelaide United confirmed the injury will not require surgery, but the extended rehabilitation period still sidelines Goodwin during a crucial selection window. With limited opportunities to build match fitness and show form, a late recall becomes significantly harder.

“It’s a frustrating time for Craig, especially with the World Cup so close,” said a source close to the team. “He will need to focus on recovery and hope there’s still a chance to prove himself once fit.”

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, kicks off on June 11. Whether Goodwin can return in time—and at full strength—remains to be seen.
