A major scare for Ecuador in Kansas City

Ecuador were expected to take care of business against Curacao, but instead they were forced to settle for a frustrating goalless draw in Kansas City. The result keeps Group E wide open, with the race to join Germany in the knockout stage set to go down to the final round.

For Curacao, the smallest nation at the tournament, this was a genuine statement result. It was also their first point at the World Cup, and unlike neighboring Haiti, they are still alive in the competition.

Ecuador 0-0 Curacao

Room stands tall

The clear headline from the match was goalkeeper Eloy Room. The 37-year-old produced a superb display, making 15 saves and coming very close to matching one of the great goalkeeping records in World Cup history. Only Tim Howard’s famous 2014 performance against Belgium ended with more saves, and that match went to extra time.

Room denied Ecuador early and often. Just three minutes in, Valencia was through on goal, but the Curacao keeper kept him out. Valencia tested him again around the 20-minute mark, and overall the veteran striker registered seven shots in the game.

Even though Curacao were under pressure for long stretches, they were not just hanging on passively. They created moments of danger themselves, and Ecuador’s defense had to stay alert throughout the evening. With Pacho of PSG and Hincapié of Arsenal in the back line, Ecuador had quality at the back, but Curacao still found enough openings to keep the match uncomfortable.

Ecuador had the ball, but not the breakthrough

The numbers told a clear story: Ecuador controlled possession for 75 percent of the match and fired 27 shots, yet they could not find the net. Room was not the only goalkeeper to shine, either. Around the hour mark, Galíndez stepped up at the other end to stop back-to-back efforts from Comenencia and Locadia.

After the break, Ecuador continued to pile on pressure. Caicedo tried his luck from distance in the 50th minute, while Plata and Valencia both came close with headers from point-blank range. Still, Curacao’s defense held together, and Room kept delivering save after save.

The closest Ecuador came to winning it was in the final minute of normal time, when former Sparta Prague player Preciado sent in a cross that crashed off the crossbar. That moment summed up the night for Ecuador: plenty of pressure, plenty of chances, but no goal.

A result that changes the group picture

Curacao may not have played flashy football, but they earned every bit of this point. Against a far more established opponent, they showed discipline, resilience, and a goalkeeper in inspired form. For Ecuador, it is a missed opportunity that leaves them with work still to do before the final group match.

With one round left, the situation in Group E remains finely balanced. Ecuador still have a path forward, but Curacao have proved they are not here just to make up the numbers.
