Premier League - the heart of English football
The roots of England's top football competition date back to 1888, when the original English league was founded - the first professional football competition in the world. It did not take on its current form and name, the Premier League, until 1992. Today, 20 teams participate in the league, and thanks to huge revenues from television rights and sponsorship deals, it is considered the richest football league on the planet.
Each season, the top four teams secure direct entry into the UEFA Champions League, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the second-highest competition - the EFL Championship.
History of success and record holders
Manchester United is the most successful club in English league history with 20 league titles. Liverpool is close behind with 19 titles, and Arsenal is in third place with 13. In recent years, however, Manchester City has clearly dominated the competition, winning four times in a row and six of the last seven seasons. The only team to break this dominance was Liverpool in the 2019/20 season.
Ugandans in the Premier League
So far, no Ugandan footballer has ever played a match in the English Premier League itself. Although some of them have proven their quality on higher European stages, barriers such as strict criteria for work permits and the national team's position in the FIFA rankings remain an obstacle.
